In a scathing assessment, former defense minister Al Carns has exposed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) as a hotbed of waste and inefficiency. His comments paint a picture of a dysfunctional system, one that's shockingly inefficient and in dire need of reform.

Carns called for a complete overhaul of the MoD's procurement process, emphasizing the need to ensure the country's readiness for potential conflicts. He questioned whether the UK's fifth-largest defense budget provides a good return on investment and suggested that a new leader, regardless of party, would face the same challenges.
"The current leadership doesn't seem to have an appetite for change," Carns observed. He acknowledged the difficulty of convincing the public about the need for increased defense spending when other areas, like the NHS, schools, and jobs, are also in dire need of investment.
Carns proposed reframing the conversation around national resilience, focusing on issues like mental health, youth unemployment, and prison reoffending. He believes that a new leader must prioritize these areas to build a stronger and more effective nation.
"The instability at the top of government and the potential leadership vacuum is a cause for concern, especially in the eyes of our enemies. Moscow, for example, is likely viewing our social divisions as a success for their propaganda campaign," Carns warned.
Despite his concerns, Carns does not regret leaving the military for politics. He believes he has made a positive impact and brought about more change in his current role than he could have achieved in his previous career.
"I've delivered more change in this job and nudged the system further than I would ever have done within my last job. It was a difficult decision, but I believe it was the right one," he concluded.
